1. Observation Tower on Kalenica – approx. 8.5 km The observation tower on Kalenica is one of the most interesting attractions in the Owl Mountains. It stands on the summit of Kalenica, 964 metres above sea level. The approximately 14-metre-high steel structure was built in 1933. From the viewing platform, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Sudetes, including the Owl Mountains, the Table Mountains, the Śnieżnik Massif and, in good weather, even the Giant Mountains. The tower is easily accessible on foot via the red Main Sudetes Trail and several other hiking routes. It is a wonderful place to rest for mountain hikers and landscape photography enthusiasts. Nearby, you can also visit the Bukowa Kalenica Nature Reserve, which protects the beech forests typical of this region. 2. Srebrna Góra Fortress – approx. 22 km Srebrna Góra Fortress is a unique monument of military architecture. Built by the Prussians in the 18th century, it is considered the largest mountain fortress in Europe. Its massive walls and strategic location at an altitude of 686 metres above sea level are truly impressive. The fortress consists of six forts, the largest and most fascinating of which is the Donjon, once the main point of defence. From the fortress walls, visitors can admire panoramic views of the Kłodzko Valley and the Owl Mountains, making it an ideal destination for lovers of history, architecture and beautiful scenery. 3. The Riese Complex – approx. 23.5 km The Riese Complex is one of the most intriguing attractions in the region, concealing a dark history connected with the Second World War. It is a system of underground tunnels and chambers excavated beneath the Owl Mountains. Its intended purpose has never been fully explained. It was probably planned as a headquarters for Hitler or as a secret armaments facility. Visitors can explore several sections open to the public, including the Osówka Underground City, Włodarz and the Walim Tunnels. Inside, they can see monumental corridors, concrete fortifications and the remains of this enormous construction project. 4. Lake Bystrzyckie – approx. 27 km Lake Bystrzyckie is one of the most beautiful attractions in Lower Silesia. It was created as an artificial reservoir on the Bystrzyca River and is surrounded by forests and picturesque walking routes. The Lubachów Dam is located on its shore and is an impressive example of early 20th-century engineering. 5. Grodno Castle – approx. 27 km Grodno Castle, situated on a hill above Lake Bystrzyckie, is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved strongholds in Lower Silesia. Its history dates back to the 13th century, and over the centuries it was expanded to include both Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. Visitors can admire its preserved defensive walls, a viewing tower offering panoramic views of the surrounding area and mysterious dungeons where, according to legend, the ghost of Princess Margaret still appears. The castle hosts numerous events, including night tours and historical reenactments that bring the lives of its former residents closer to visitors. Surrounded by dense forests and hiking trails, Grodno Castle is a perfect destination for a trip combining history with outdoor recreation. 6. Rzeczka Ski Resort – approx. 28 km Rzeczka Ski Resort is a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts in Lower Silesia. It offers several slopes of varying difficulty, suitable for both beginners and more experienced skiers. The slopes are regularly groomed, artificially snowed and illuminated, making evening skiing possible. The resort also provides ski equipment rental and ski schools, offering comprehensive services for visitors. 7. Observation Tower on Wielka Sowa – approx. 31 km The observation tower on Wielka Sowa is a must-see attraction for mountain hikers and lovers of beautiful panoramic views. The stone tower, also known as the “Guardian of the Sudetes”, was built in 1906 and is 25 metres high. Its distinctive neo-Gothic architecture attracts attention, while those who climb the 115 steps to the top are rewarded with breathtaking views. In good weather, visitors can admire not only the Sudetes, including the Giant Mountains, the Table Mountains and the Śnieżnik Massif, but also see Wrocław, located approximately 70 kilometres away. The tower is an excellent place to relax after a hike, and its surroundings are also ideal for winter cross-country skiing trips. 8. Basilica in Wambierzyce – approx. 31 km The Basilica in Wambierzyce is an impressive Baroque church set against the beautiful scenery of the Table Mountains. It is one of the most important Marian sanctuaries in Poland and is often referred to as the “Silesian Jerusalem” because of the numerous Calvary chapels located around the village. The first church on this site was built as early as the 13th century, while the present basilica was constructed in the 18th century according to a design by Christoph Tauscher. It is not only a place of religious worship, but also an architectural gem. The façade, with its monumental staircase, is particularly impressive. The richly decorated interior features numerous altars, frescoes and the precious statue of Our Lady of Wambierzyce. 9. Książ Castle – approx. 40 km Książ Castle, a jewel of Lower Silesia and one of the largest castles in Poland, impresses visitors with its monumental architecture and turbulent history. Located on a rocky hill in Wałbrzych and surrounded by the forests of Książ Landscape Park, it combines elements of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Its history dates back to the 13th century, and for centuries it belonged to the powerful Hochberg family. During the Second World War, the castle was seized by the Nazis and incorporated into the mysterious Riese Complex, which continues to inspire speculation. Visitors can explore its richly decorated interiors, underground tunnels, extensive terraces and the famous Książ Palm House. 10. Gold Mine in Złoty Stok – approx. 45 km The Gold Mine in Złoty Stok combines mining history with the unique atmosphere of underground tunnels. It is one of the oldest gold mines in Poland. Today, visitors can discover its secrets by exploring historic tunnels, admiring an underground waterfall and enjoying an exciting ride on the orange train. Additional attractions include trying gold panning and learning about the alchemical secrets of former miners. Filled with legends, fascinating stories and interactive attractions, the mine appeals to both history enthusiasts and families with children, offering an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Sudetes.
